Phew, what a breath of fresh air! Thank you for speaking truth in the face of so much sensationalistic self-help BS. You’re nailing it, Forrest. I’m grateful for your work!
Hi Forrest - your Dad's work has been an inspiration to me for about ten years+... it has certainly kept my head above water! Your writings, while similar insofar as being motivational, are very different. Thank you for saying that your 'magic wand would be addressing poverty'. As an 80 year old now in a poverty trap, it is draining and leaves very little willpower for goal setting. I am not complaining. I am very fortunate to live in a beautiful house, for which I give gratitude every day. It's just that, in constantly trying to make ends meet, my energy is depleted and my spirit is not as ease. However, writings such as yours, together with the philosophy of Stoicism, comfort me and keep me going. Thank you
A friend and I, both social workers, would get our kicks by sitting down on the floor of the self help section at Barnes & Nobles sand we would find the most ridiculous statements in said books and read them aloud and chuckle or guffaw depending on how stupid they were. We often gathered a few like minded people who laughed along with us. It was a fun way to spend a few hours.
How refreshing Forrest! Personal growth and fulfilment will never be found within our capitalistic labor force/system. The values and beliefs that go along with it are categorically non-existent as they support the business model of life --as some Party goers appear to revere and also tout that a CEO ought to be who & how we are to be governed. Living within these "constraints" and, indeed, amidst the most recent horror in US, a hopeless "normal neurotic" is the best one can strive for --and then you die!... Thanks for the lift Forrest.
I totally agree with the comments above. It’s such a relief to turn towards acceptance instead of constant battling. Those who still propagate any version of “You can be anything you want” ought to be obliged to do some social work.
Excellent, very well said, very helpful. Easy to understand and clear. I like the book title becoming a normal neurotic person. Please keep sending these posts. Thank you Forest for all that you do!
